AWANA Games

This past weekend was the AWANA games. Sarah, Ethan, Abby and Molly all competed in multiple events.
 Sparky games were first!
 Sparky crawl
 Sparky train
 Our Sparks took first! Yay!
Then it was time for T&T games.
Our girls dominated in tug of war! Go Sarah!
Oh and she might have just crushed in balloon volley... Gotta' love those tall genes!
 Boys' relay
Our T&T teams both got 2nd! Yay!
The mini-Macks all did awesome! Such a fun day!!

More Sewing for Disney

Totally carried away?
Maybe....
Josiah is loving his pirate Mickey Mouse shirt!
And I made a matching one for Ethan!
A Minnie Mouse shirt for Sarah.
Next I took the scraps from Anna's Minnie Mouse pillowcase dress, cut them into pieces,
 and made a fun Minnie!
 Also for Sarah!

Then I wanted to make some Minnie Mouse outfits for the little girls, but I couldn't find any girl's short sleeved shirts, so I bought these:
clearance men's shirts from the Gap.
I cut them WAY down and lettuce-edged the bottom and sleeves. Decorated the shirts and made matching skirts based on this idea!
For my totally uncooperative model, I made a little Minnie Mouse peasant dress!
And each girl has a Minnie Mouse hair pretty, also from here.

Phew!
Now I can pack!

My Princesses Three

Although I got two of these dresses made in time for the Harvest Party (third girly was the octopus), the real reason for these dresses happens in 2 weeks when we will be partying in the Happiest Place on Earth.
Yep! Packing up these silly princesses and taking them to Disneyland!
So, of course they needed some comfy-to-play-in dresses. I decided cotton would be comfortable for long days of walking and going on rides.

I started with a basic peasant dress pattern, like this free one, but decided to shirr the bodice pieces for a better "princess-y" fit. This required some inches added to the width of the pattern and some figuring of lengths to get them right. I also made the sleeves more cap sleeve length for poofy princess sleeves.
Next came all the important details:
For Snow White's sleeves, I did inverted pleats with red ribbon peeking out,
gold braided trim down the front,
and of course a signature red bow headband!
For Belle's dress I made a red ribbon rose to adorn the front of the shoulder piece,
and a ruched skirt adorned with little ribbon roses!
Cinderella's dress has a front panel with braided trim,
signature sparkly hip poofs,
and matching headband. (Followed this tutorial)
Are the princesses three counting the days until we leave?
Definitely!

For My Octo-girl, Again

OK, I have to be honest. Our family doesn't really "do" Halloween. We usually just watch a movie and devour a huge bowl of candy. But after I saw the perfect costume for Abby to wear to the AWANA Harvest Party tonight, I just had to make it for her!
The DIY octopus costume idea isn't a new one. It can be found all over the internet (my fave here.) Abby wanted a purple octopus, so I picked up 4 pairs of knee socks when they were on sale at Target.
I did round each sock to look more like a tentacle and less like, well, a sock. I made a skirt out of the socks by sewing them together about 6" down.
The hat was made from the bottom of a toddler's size t-shirt. A simple beanie design with appliqued eyeballs.
My octo-girl is super excited to sport her costume tonight!

A Special Gift

Abby's long-time wish has been to ride a real horse. So, on her birthday, we told her one of her presents was going to be horse riding! She was so excited! After making all the arrangements, we recently packed up our Abby to fulfill her wish.
She was introduced to the horse she would be riding, Smoke. She brushed him carefully.
Then she got loaded onto Smoke's back. "Whoa! It's so high up!"
She got to ride inside the arena,
and then outside for a bit.
Then she returned to the arena to learn how to trot. That big smile tells what she thought of that!
At last it was time to say goodbye to Smoke. She fed him a thank you treat and led him out to pasture.
I'm sure it was a special day that she won't ever forget.

Beware Of Corn Dogs!

To date, they've claimed two teeth in our house. My older kids, who don't like corn dogs anyway, said they always knew they were evil.

I think Abby looks totally adorable with her toothless grin!

For My Octo-girl

My radiant girl,
quick-witted,
observant,
strong.
 You are compassionate,
fair,
and so happy.
Lover of octopi, I had to make an octopus cake just for you!
 Happy 7th Birthday, my Abby!
You are a delight!
